MPI Forestry Scholarships – applications open now!

It’s an exciting time in the forestry sector. Technology and science are changing the way we do things and is paving the way to provide opportunities for rewarding and lifelong careers. We need people who can work with robotics, help develop new forestry products and processes, and take them to the market.

With the One Billion Trees programme a key focus for this Government, we need to ensure that our young men and women in forestry  have the right skills for today and tomorrow.

To assist, the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) is offering four scholarships for the 2019 academic year for qualifying Māori and female students enrolling in the Bachelor of Forestry Science or Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Forest Engineering at the University of Canterbury. This will increase to 18 scholarships over the next three years.

Applications are open now until 31 August 2018.

The new Forestry Scholarships – Ngā Karahipi Uru Rākau – aim to grow the capability of the forestry sector and increase the number of women and Māori in the industry.

Successful winners will recieve:

  • $8,000 a year for 4 years (the length of the degree) to help with tuition fees and living costs, and
  • a paid internship with Te Uru Rākau (Forestry New Zealand) or another forestry employer.
