Treaty Settlement Bill Introduction & First Reading

It was an emotional morning on 1 August 2013 as our Kaumātua and Trustees witnessed our Maungaharuru-Tangitū Hapū Claims Settlement Bill being read for the first time in Parliament.  Eight MPs from most of the political parties made speeches supporting our Bill; you can watch the videos or read the transcripts online.

During the last speech our Kaumātua exclaimed “Kua haruru te whenua!” as we felt a 4.9 earthquake! It was timely given various MPs had spoken about Maungaharuru, our roaring mountain.

Our Bill is now with the Māori Affairs Select Committee who have heard public submissions, will recommend amendments and report to the House.  To read more information about the legislative process click here.
