Whānau may want to use relevant karakia when going to wāhi taonga (sites of significance), awa (rivers), roto (lakes), ngahere (forests), the moana (sea). Also, when leaving those places, especially after collecting e.g. kaimoana, tuna, rongoā, leaves, shells, stones etc.

Our Hapū reo expert, Justin Puna, composed karakia to provide safe passage, give thanks and acknowledge the realms of Tangaroa, Hinemoana, Tāne, Papatūānuku, Ranginui and Tāwhirimātea.

The karakia are available to download in a few different formats below. TIP: you can save the karakia to your phone for quick access when you are out and about (see instructions below).

Kaupapa: these karakia support aspirations shared through He Kāinga Taurikura o Tangitū to reconnect with Te Taiao, uphold tikanga, and share mātauranga with tamariki and mokopuna.
