Kia tū Māori te marae – Building a proud, vibrant & modern Marae
The Marae Development Project follows mahi undertaken in the Marae Options Project. After thorough investigation, the hapū agreed that only one feasible option remains – to develop the Marae at the current location in the Tangoio valley. The hapū requested that a smaller committee be formed to help achieve the following Project Objectives:
1. Reduce flood risk to Tangoio Marae by rebuilding the western stop bank;
2. Build a new wharekai;
3. Improve site drainage to deal with nuisance flooding
4. Repair and upgrade existing buildings including Punanga Te Wao, Maungaharuru, the Kōhanga Reo; and
5. Reserve funds for a ‘Plan B’ and insurance (in case the marae becomes uninsurable).
Importantly the Marae will be developed in line with our hapū aspirations. To achieve the vision of Kia tū Māori te marae (Building a proud, vibrant & modern Marae) and the Project Objectives, the Marae Development Committee have developed a three phase approach:
The Phased Marae Development Approach
Phase One: Develop a Master Plan
A. Confirm the Marae Footprint: The Tangoio Marae boundary is confirmed, neighbouring land owners are aware of project aspirations and fully support efforts to progress marae development aspirations.
B. Stop Bank Design and Construction: The stop bank is designed by a suitably qualified and experienced engineer. Resource consents are sought and civil works are completed by a contractor experienced in stop bank construction.
C. Whānau Workshops and Consultation: The architect conducts a series of workshops with whānau to develop a facilities upgrade plan (Master Plan) for the marae. This includes input into the design of the wharekai and upgrade of existing marae buildings.
Phase Two: Develop a Construction and Costings Plan
A. Technical Feasibility and Support
B. Detailed designs and costings are developed. Relevant consents are obtained. Construction contractors are appointed and a construction plan is finalised.
Phase Three: Construct Marae
A. The contractor completes all works according to the construction plan.
Marae Development Committee
A Marae Development Committee (MDC) has been set up to oversee the project and meet regularly to protect and develop the Marae at the current location. The MDC is governed and guided by two key documents agreed to by the Tangoio Marae Trustees and Maungaharuru-Tangitū Trust.
